  1. Thank you for the background information about the INF treaty and the nice-written post. I think in Putin’s view, the deployment of new cruise missile could be regarded as a response towards the stationing of NATO troops in Poland this January, which was the biggest US deployment in Europe since Cold War, and most of all, near Kaliningrad where Russian Baltic Fleet is located. Feeling insecure and threatened, it is conceivable that Russia violated the treaty and built missile for self-help.

    • I agree, it could definitely be seen as a response to NATO’s buildup in Poland and the Baltics. The move probably would’ve happened either way, but with the NATO buildup underway, Russia can somewhat justify their moves….at least in their view.
